Wards Legal Matters Podcast

Plain-language conversations about the law - made with you in mind.

Wards Legal Matters is a podcast about the law and the people who practice it - designed for listeners who want clarity, not complexity. Episodes feature thoughtful conversations with members of the Wards Lawyers team, guided by host Denis Grignon (who is not a lawyer), so legal topics stay accessible, relatable, and easy to follow.

About the show

We’ll let you decide whether the “matters” in Wards Legal Matters is a noun or a verb. Either way, the purpose is the same:

Smart, professionally produced conversations

Straightforward language

Topics that actually come up in life and business

A tone that’s informative—without taking itself too seriously

Think of it as a show about the law (and lawyers) for people who aren’t necessarily lawyers - created because we believe informed communities make better decisions.

What we talk about

You’ll fit well here if you’re curious about:

Wills and estate planning:

what to do now vs. later

Neighbour disputes:

when to involve the law (and when not to)

Employment issues:

what matters if things go sideways with a boss

Courts and decision-makers:

what judges and justices of the peace actually do

And more

based on the questions we hear in our region every day

Legal decisions often feel intimidating - not because they’re impossible to understand, but because the language can get in the way.

This show removes the barrier. We talk through common legal questions in plain terms, explore how lawyers think about risk and outcomes, and share practical context so you can make informed next steps. That’s part of how we serve our community: clear counsel, explained well.

Our Guests

A strong podcast needs strong subject-matter experts.

As the largest law firm in the area, Wards Lawyers brings together lawyers and law clerks across a wide range of practice areas - each with their own strengths, approaches, and perspective. That creates a deep bench of guests who can explain complex topics clearly, and connect legal concepts back to real decisions.

As CEO of Wards Lawyers, Melissa has a calm, practical approach - and the experience to guide thoughtful conversations, shape strong storytelling, and keep each episode focused on what listeners actually need to understand.

Host

Denis Grignon is the host of Wards Legal Matters.

Denis is a long-time resident of the City of Kawartha Lakes with a journalism career spanning more than three decades. He’s also a trained interviewer who knows how to research, prepare, and guide a conversation so it’s clear, engaging, and useful.

Most importantly: Denis isn’t a lawyer - which is exactly the point. He asks the questions listeners would ask, translates “legal-speak” into plain language, and keeps the tone light when it can be - while still respecting the seriousness of the topic when it matters.

Our Music

We’re proud to feature music from artists connected to our community.

Sean Jamieson

Singer-songwriter Sean Jamieson brings polished, up-tempo tracks and quieter, more reflective pieces that suit a wide range of episode themes. Based in Lindsay, Sean’s music is enjoyed well beyond Kawartha Lakes - but his home base is right here.

Stella Panacci

Singer-songwriter Stella Panacci (formerly of indie band Kat Rocket) relocated from Toronto to Kawartha Lakes and brought with her a remarkable catalogue of work. Her album Patchwork showcases thoughtful writing and a distinct voice - an ideal match for the show’s tone.

Our Audience

We want this show to reflect real questions and real stories from across Kawartha Lakes and the surrounding region. If there’s a topic you’d like us to explore - or someone you think we should interview - send us a note.
